August,2023 We sorted out the clothing, shoes, socks, and all the canned goods, and the barbque sauce, the crackers, cerals. and other food stuff into 5 equal parts. We kept one for our church and pantry, gave one to a Navajo church i Lupton, and the other 3 to the three Spanish churches in Gallup. The Spanish use the lentils like the natives use pinto beans...for everything. They were delighted to each get 100 pounds of the lentils. They give to their people, feed the homeless and give them clothes on Saturdays at the flea market and distribute to needy when they learn about them, as do we. I have asked each to get pictures to me which I will send at a later date when I get them. The students have been delighted to get the backpacks and school supplies. It has been a blessing by way of you to meet the growing needs of our community and surrounding areas.
The picture is of two zuni girls whose parents just moved here a couple of months ago and they both work at the mall leaving the girls alone during the day. (They started school now). I have close friends who live in the trailer park where they reside. My "son" a Navajo man who calls me mom went out to his truck to get some tools and saw the girls standing across on the corner. He said hello and went back in. Soon he went out for some other tools and they were still standing there so he started up a conversation and asked if they were waiting for someone to pick them up. In the ensuing conversation they said they were
hungry and could he give them something to eat. He brought them in because "Aunty" with whom they live had just finished lunch and there was spaghetti left over so he fed them. They said they had no food at home so Erwin called me and we got a large box of food and drinks and he took it to their home. The parents work from 10:00 in the morning when the mall opens until their stores close in the evening. Erwin then gave information to the parents to invite the girls to the VBS at the A/G church for three evenings and a church bus could pick them up and drop them off after at their home again...all of which would happen while the parents were at work. The food opened the doors for them. and yes, they literally had no food for any meal.
